Touring bike weight6/9/2023 A good touring bike might even feel a bit "harsh" and uncomfortably stiff when ridden around the parking lot unladen, but once you put the load on there it will tend to settle down to its natural state. So a touring bike should be built stronger and stiffer than your average non-touring bike, so that it can stand up to the tortional stresses produced by all the weight you're going to carry. What happens is that the more load you put on, the more this makes the frame flex, which can produce some really disconcerting effects, including speed wobble and shimmy. Many people aren't aware that a fully loaded touring bike handles very differently from one that is unladen (i.e. It's a starting point, not the be all and end all of checklists use it to help filter out candidates and judge different bikes against each other. ![]() ![]() This is a general list of some of the main attributes that you might want to look for in a touring bike.
